What is your Health Age (also called biological age)?
5 min read · Updated 9 September 2026
Chronological age is simply how many birthdays you have had. Your Health Age — also called biological age — is an estimate of how old your body actually seems to be, based on measurable markers rather than the calendar. Two people born on the same day can have quite different Health Ages, and unlike your birthday, your Health Age can move in either direction.
How it is estimated
ProGen Health uses a published, peer-reviewed approach called Phenotypic Age, developed by researchers at Yale. It combines a set of routine blood biomarkers — covering areas like inflammation, metabolism, kidney and liver markers and blood cells — with your chronological age, into a single estimate. Because it draws on markers you are already testing, no extra visit is needed.
- It uses standard blood markers, not a separate specialist test.
- It blends several body systems into one easy-to-track number.
- It updates each time you test, so you can watch it change.
Why it can change
The encouraging part is that your Health Age is not fixed. Because it is built from markers that respond to how you live — sleep, movement, nutrition, stress and more — it can improve over time. That makes it a motivating way to see whether the changes you are making are actually adding up, rather than relying on how you feel.
When we can — and can’t — calculate it
The calculation needs a specific set of biomarkers to be present in your result set. If any of them are missing for a given cycle, ProGen Health will not show an estimate rather than show an unreliable one — you will simply see that your Health Age is unavailable that cycle, and why. When the full set is there, it appears in your dashboard alongside your other results.
Frequently asked questions
- What is Health Age (biological age)?
- Your Health Age, also called biological age, is an estimate of how old your body appears to be based on measurable health markers, as opposed to chronological age, which is just the number of years since you were born.
- How is your Health Age calculated at ProGen Health?
- We use the peer-reviewed Phenotypic Age method, which combines a set of routine blood biomarkers with your chronological age into a single estimate. It updates each time you test.
- Can your Health Age go down?
- Yes. Because it is built from markers that respond to lifestyle, your Health Age (biological age) can improve over time, which is part of what makes it a useful thing to track.
